Fota Island is almost an island in Cork Harbour separated from Little Island to the west and Great Island to the south. Fota Island golf course shares the island with Fota House & Gardens and Fota Wildlife Park. The island was originally a large 780 acre estate, so the golf course inherited mature woodlands on rolling harbourside terrain. Opened together with a 5***** hotel in 1993 original course was deisnged by Peter McEvoy and Christy O'Connor Jnr. To allow for hosting of the Irish Open (2001, 2002, 2014), Jeff Howes was engaged to bring the course up to required tour standards. The course has matured gracefully and has moved up our parkland rankings - the challenge and setting are perfectly balanced.
Cork City offers a range of quality accommodation. The renowned Imperial or Metropole Hotels are the first to spring to mind.
Killarney is now just 1¼ hours from Cork City.
The flagship course at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, the Killeen Course is one of the finest championship parkland courses in Ireland. Accuracy is vital with water a dominant feature. The opening holes play alongside the famous Lakes with the opening drive being one of the most demanding in Ireland. The course then meanders through mature woodland where several smaller lakes and streams constantly challenge approach shots. The Killeen course reopened in 2006 after extensive renovation that included the introduction of challenging, well contoured, sand-based greens. The Killeen course finishes with a superb par-4, guarded on the entire left hand side by a wide stream. For those seeking a break from the rigours of links golf, the Killeen course is the obvious choice.
After golf, explore some of the many attractions in and around Killarney. Muckross House & Gardens, Muckross Abbey and Torc Waterfall are all in Killarney National Park just outside the town. Ross Castle is also worth visiting. The town itself is atmospheric and provides good shopping facilities as well as many fine traditional pubs and restaurants.
Cork G.C. is located on the shores of Cork Harbour on Little Island, 6 miles east of Cork City.
Cork is one of the oldest golf courses in Ireland, established in 1888. It was redesigned in 1927 by the legendary Alister Mackenzie (Lahinch, Augusta National, Pebble Beach). Scenically located overlooking Cork Harbour, the golf course is one of the few true heathland layouts in Ireland. The course itself has a number of huge advantages. It's location on the estuary of the River Lee as it enters Cork Harbour. The maturity and grace you would expect from such a long established course. The heathland terrain that includes a stretch around an old quarry. The large undulating greens are fast and true. Getting tee shots into position to approach them is a large part of the challenge - there are several long carries from the tees. Cork Golf Club is certainly one for the traditionalist golfer who enjoys a great sense of history and a course that seamlessly integrates the natural landscape of woodland, heathland, quarries and shoreline into its testing design.
After golf the Jameson Distillery at Midleton is 7 miles east. Alternatively visit the heritage harbour town of Cobh one of the principal points of Irish emigration and the last port of call for the ill-fated Titanic. Cork City is also worth visiting with the famous Shandon Bells and the Olde English Market being among the popular attractions.
