Portstewart Golf Club - Par 72 - 6,895 Yards
Portstewart Golf Club is another world-class links golf course on the north coast of Ireland in the county of LondonDerry. It is just four miles from the links at Royal Portrush, just across the border in County Antrim.
Portstewart underwent major reconstruction in the early 1990's and hosted the Irish Amateur Close Championship in 1992. It was after this tournament that Portstewart emerged from under the shadow of its famous neighbour to stand independently as a truly great links course.
The first is rated by many as the finest opening hole in Ireland, if not the world (a subject fiercely debated in 2003 between Tailor-Made Golf Tours and the members of Machrihanish Golf Club, a debate that only resulted in several empty bottles of Springbank).
(12 Jan 2005) - The full course description will be posted shortly.
Portstewart is a fine golf links and should definitely not be missed by those travelling north to play Royal Portrush. In fact, careful consideration should be given to only playing golf in northwest Ireland - together with Royal Portrush and Portstewart the links at Castlerock, two outstanding courses at Ballyliffin and, further west in Donegal, the awesome links at Portsalon and the magnificent new Sandy Hills links at Rosapenna can provide a feast of links golf without the hassle of travelling.

Notable Notes
Although Ireland looks pretty small on a map, being approximately the size of Vermont, journeys can take time. Portstewart is about as far north as you can go, 150 miles (3.5 hours) from Dublin airport. From County Kerry however it is 300 miles and Waterville (see left) is 343 miles or 8.5 hours driving. In short, it is possible to include Royal Portrush and the northern courses on a golf tour itinerary combined with the southwestern links, but either hire a helicopter or be prepared for some long journeys!
