Kinvara is a small village at the head of a sheltered harbour famous for the Galway Hooker sailing boat. Kinvara marks the start of the scenic route to and through the Burren. Ballyvaughan is another seaside village most noted for the seafood served at Monk's Bar & Restaurant. From Ballyvaughan travel through the interior of the Burren region via Corkscrew Hill to Lisdoonvarna, Ireland's only spa town and still famous for its matchmaking festival. Alternatively take the spectacular coastal route past Black Head and through the village of Fanore to Doolin, famous for Irish music in any of the three village pubs.
Galway is Ireland's best city mainly due to the chilled and relaxed atmosphere along its pedestrian streets where there are mnay pubs and restaurants and much 'ceol agus craic'. Galway a popular destination and there are plenty of quality accommodations to choose from.
🚙 Westport Golf Club is 2 miles northwest of Westport Town. The journey from Galway to Westport takes about 1ΒΌ hours.
Westport is one of Ireland's leading parkland courses laid out in 250 acres of rolling parkland once part of the Westport House estate. One of the main attractions of Westport is its location looking across Clew Bay to Croagh Patrick beyond and the most memorable holes at Westport are those that oplay along the shoreline. The par-3 12th is the first of these, a tee-shot from an elevated tee - that plays to a green 220 yards away (back tees) -offers stunning views but if the prevailing wind is blowing the green can be hard to reach! The par-5 15th is Westport's signature hole, hugging the shoreline with a tee-shot requiring a carry over a gully. Fred Hawtree designed Westport in 1973 and at 7,000 yards from the back tees it is fair to say that Westport offers challenge and beauty in equal measure.
After golf consider a journey through Newport and on to Achill Island (25 miles), Ireland\'s largest 'island'. Achill is accessible by landbridge and is a beautiful place. The mountain interior - dominated by Slievemore mountain at 671m and Croaghaun at 668m - looks over miles of rocky coastline including stunning cliffs. At sea-level there are five blue-flag beaches on the island. Achill also has a pleasant 9-hole golf course at Keel while Calveys restaurant is Bridgestone Guide recommended for its natural Achill lamb.
🚙 Galway Bay lies on an outcrop of land that faces back to Galway City across the 'real' Galway Bay, near the village of Renville, southwest of the town of Oranmore. It normally takes about 30 minutes to drive from Eyre Square.
Galway Bay is a dramatic course where the name comes from the natural water hazard of the same name which provides the backdrop to this Par 72 PGA Championship golf course. When designing the course, former Ryder Cup and World Cup golfer Christy O'Connor Jnr superbly blended the stunning backdrop of Galway Bay and the rugged curves of the Atlantic coastline with mature trees, water hazards, concealed bunkers and highly acclaimed putting surfaces. The course was redesigned in 2008 to provide more visibility of the surrounding ocean and provide a more links like feel with remodelled greens that feature increased mounding and run off areas. With variable wind speed and directions the course plays differently each day posing a considerable challenge to even the lowest handicap golfers, yet it is a true and fair test of golf.
South of Doonbeg past the seaside resort of Kilkee is the Loop Head Peninsula. An area of outstanding natural beauty there are miles of breathtaking coastal scenery. Places to visit include Loop Head Lighthouse, where there is a lovely coastal walk and the Bridges of Ross, a natural phenomenon, formed by the action of the Atlantic. Dolphin watching trips are available from the village of Carrigaholt.
🚙 Connemara G.C. is almost at the most southwestern point of County Galway, 3½ miles west of the vaillage of Ballyconneely. The journey from Galway city take 1½ scenic hours.
Connemara Golf Club is a true links course situated on the western coast of County Galway. The scenery is stunning on a sunny day with the Atlantic to the west and south and the rugged Twelve Bens and Maamturk mountain ranges to the east. The 'gentle' opening offers a chance to start well and to put some decent numbers on the card. Given this chance to warm-up, this great links slowly starts to turn the screw with a fabulous stretch of holes from the 8th to the 18th. The par-3 13th is a beautiful golf hole and in many people's opinion Connemara's signature hole. Standing on the tee you know you need a pure strike on the ball to get on the green. Anything short will roll back 30 yards and anything left or right will be gathered by bunkers. Unusually, there are two magnificent Par-5's to finish and you can be guaranteed one of them will be into a sea breeze. Peter Allis commented "If there were a course like this on the west coast of England it would surely host a British Open"
The pretty village of Roundstone is worth visiting and marks the start of a route that has endless possibilities through the southern Connemara region to Galway. Alternatively return through Clifden, the 'Capital of Connemara' and take a trip through 'Joyce Country', the interior rugged mountain landscape of Connemara. End at the famous village of Cong, between Lough Mask and Lough Corrib where the movile 'The Quiet Man' was filmed.
🚙 Dromoland Castle Golf Club is near Newmarket-on-Fergus in County Clare. The journey from Galway takes 1 hour.
Dromoland Castle Golf and Country Club has been in existence since 1962 with golf being played over the lush rolling tree lined landscape that drains into Dromoland Lough with the Castle as a backdrop. The present course opened for play in April 2004 after a lavish restoration of both the golf course and castle. The course architects, Ron Kirby and the late JB Carr teamed up again, following their success at the Old Head of Kinsale, to produce a great parkland challenge that meanders through the estate amongst fine trees and around many natural lakes. The golf course then finishes in fine style in front of the castle. The highlight of golf at Dromoland is the immaculate greens that are true and lightning fast - they are claimed to be the fastest in Ireland.
🚙 After golf the journey to Ennis will take 10 minutes.
🚙 The golf links at Doonbeg is 25 miles southwest of Ennis, the journey taking 45 minutes.
A severe storm in 2014 proved to be the catalyst for the transformation of the links at Doonbeg from a course that divided opinion to a course that deserves a place amongst Ireland's very best links courses. The storm destroyed five greens and in the case of the old 14th, a par-3 that was bizarrely often referred to as the signature hole, the hole was complately lost. Kiawah Island Properties had enough and sold the property. The new owners engaged Martin Hawtree to restore the course and his efforts resulted in a links that finally does its oceanside location justice. The links is a proper golf test with few design anomalies to moan about, while the location - considered in 1892 by the Black Watch Regiment as the location for Lahinch Golf Club - is simply one of the most glorious and allows several holes to hug the 3 mile stretch of land perched atop the magnificent strand below.
South of Doonbeg past the seaside resort of Kilkee is the Loop Head Peninsula. An area of outstanding natural beauty there are miles of breathtaking coastal scenery. 🚙 Lahinch is 30 minutes west-north-west of Ennis.
Many visitors favourite Irish links is the Old Course at Lahinch. First played in 1892, Lahinch was founded by members of the British Army's Black Watch Regiment and local businessmen. The present site was chosen over the site of the current Doonbeg links because of the proximity of a railway station. It ws remodelled in 1894 by Old Tom Morris - the famous Klondyke (4th) and Dell (5th) holes still remain today. In 1927 Dr. Alister Mackenzie laid out the present day course before going on to design Augusta National, Pebble Beach and Cypress Point in the U.S.A. Remembered principally for the "Klondyke" (4th) a par-5 where a huge sand bank must be negotiated and the following "Dell" hole, Lahinch offers a variety of challenging, true links holes. There are several excellent par-4's including the 1st, 6th, 7th, 12th and 15-17. However our favourite is the 3rd - a contender for the best in Ireland.
After golf visit the Cliffs of Moher and watch the sun set over the Aran Islands. The cliffs are 7 miles west of Lahinch. Have dinner in the village of Doolin, renowned nationally and internationally for its traditional Irish music in any of the three village pubs.
🛫 After a final night in Ennis the journey to Shannon Airport will take 20 minutes.
