28th February 2006: GUI Relocates to Carton House The Golfing Union of Ireland has recently completed the relocation of its headquarters to Carton House. The complex also includes the National Academy and Golf Museum. The GUI has its own complex on the 1,000-acre estate. As well as the office complex from where golf in Ireland will be administered, the National Academy provides a state-of-the-art training complex for Ireland's top amateurs and GUI team panels. The academy will also be open to the public. The 22-acres facility includes a floodlit driving range, computerised swing analysis equipment and a superb short-game practice area with bunkers and greens of the same standard as the adjoining O'Meara and Montgomerie courses at Carton House. The Golfing Union of Ireland is the oldest golf union in the world having been established on 12th October 1891. The 9 founding members were all Ulster clubs but there were in fact 28 courses open for play on that date. Today there are 408 golf clubs affiliated to the GUI with over 300,000 members. The Golf Museum at Carton House will chart the development of golf in Ireland and the role of the GUI is developing and administering golf since its establishment. |
